How dieting works

April 26, 2012 by admin in Health

In a nutshell, when you consume more calories than it takes to run your systems (lungs, heart, breathing), and doing physical work, you store fat and gain weight. When you spend more energy than you consume with food, you lose weight. Because your body needs energy to function, breathe and stay warm, it is not recommended to drastically cut down on calorie consumption.

Below is the average daily calorie allowance for healthy adults.

Female

19-30 years old needs:
2,000 calories if inactive
2,000-2,200 if moderately active
2,400 calories if active

31-50 years old needs:
1,800 calories if inactive
2,000 if moderately active
2,200 calories if active

50 and over years old needs:
1,600 calories if inactive
1,800 if moderately active
2,000-2,200 calories if active
