23 things to do this Thanksgiving long weekend

September 28, 2012 by admin in Homepage Slider, Lifestyle

1  Host a Thanksgiving dinner. If you didn’t get invited over for dinner this year, or if the family are far away, don’t spend the holiday alone. Have your friends over – there are always a few people like yourself who have no one to spend Thanksgiving with. Host a potluck: cook the turkey, and ask everyone to bring something.

2  Invite an immigrant over for a Thanksgiving dinner. Introduce a new Canadian to the Canadian Thanksgiving tradition.

3  Grill a turkey. The secret to grilling the turkey is in brining overnight and avoiding cooking it over direct heat.

4  On a Monday after Thanksgiving, decorate the house for Halloween.

5  Go to a Halloween haunted house or take a haunted walking tour of your town’s old area.

6  Go to an amusement park. The crowds ease off when the weather gets cooler, but the roller coasters are still running. Check the park’s website for open hours, as in the fall they may operate on a limited schedule.

7  Go wine tasting.

9  Visit a farm. Look for an entertainment farm that offers a petting zoo, a maze, or a picnic area for a day full of fun. Raspberries, apples, corn, flowers, squash, and gourds are in still in season in October.

10  Attend a Thanksgiving Day parade.

11  Go to Oktoberfest.  Kitchener Waterloo hosts the largest Bavarian festival in North America. It also hosts the greatest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada.

12  Go cross border shopping. If visiting relatives in cities close to the US border, take a short drive to get some bargains.

13  Light a scented candle. Fill the house with the fall aromas. Look for flavors of spiced pumpkin, apple, ginger and cloves.

14  Make butternut squash soup. The secret to a creamy soup is in adding a couple of tablespoons of rice.

21  Do a cleanse. If not attending any Thanksgiving dinners, take the opportunity of the long weekend and do a cleanse, or start a diet. Since the first 3 days of any diet are the hardest to survive, having three days off work without access to food court make it easier to avoid the food temptations and take a rest if the energy levels drop from decreased calorie intake.
